Synology unveils DS925+: A high-performance, scalable NAS for modern workflows

Synology has officially launched the DS925+, a compact yet powerful 4-bay NAS solution designed to meet the evolving storage demands of small businesses, IT admins, creative professionals, and hybrid workforces. Building on its predecessor, the DS923+, this new model significantly upgrades processing power, networking, and storage flexibility.

At the heart of the DS925+ is an AMD Ryzen V1500B quad-core processor, replacing the dual-core Ryzen R1600 found in the DS923+. This upgrade, paired with 4GB of DDR4 ECC memory, which can be expanded up to 32GB, ensures consistent and reliable performance under demanding workloads like multi-user backups, high-resolution media management, and virtualisation.

With sequential read and write speeds of up to 522 MB/s and 565 MB/s, respectively, the DS925+ easily handles large file transfers and simultaneous connections, making it ideal for collaborative environments and media-intensive operations.

The DS925+ supports up to four 3.5” SATA HDDS or 2.5” SATA SSDS out of the box, and up to nine drives with the DX525 expansion unit, unlocking a potential raw capacity of 180 TB. For users needing even faster I/O, two built-in M.2 2280 NVMe SSD slots can be used for SSD caching or creating dedicated SSD storage pools—without occupying the primary drive bays.

This makes the unit a flexible fit whether you’re backing up critical data, hosting large media libraries, or managing large-scale file synchronisation across teams.

In a major connectivity enhancement, the DS925+ ditches the dual 1GbE ports of its predecessor in favour of dual 2.5GbE LAN ports. With Link Aggregation support, users benefit from higher throughput, failover protection, and load balancing which is critical for minimising downtime and ensuring data availability.

External ports include two USB 3.2 Gen 1 and a USB Type-C expansion port, marking a shift from the eSATA ports used in previous generations.

Running on Synology’s DiskStation Manager (DSM), the DS925+ delivers more than just storage. It is an all-in-one platform for file sharing, backup, media organisation, collaboration, and surveillance.

    DSM integrates:

    • Active Backup Suite, Hyper Backup, and Snapshot Replication for multi-layered data protection across devices, virtual machines, and cloud applications.
    • Synology Drive, Photos, Office, and Chat for real-time collaboration, photo and video management, and secure communication.
    • Surveillance Station, supporting up to 40 IP cameras, turning the NAS into a robust, subscription-free video surveillance hub with smart alerts and hybrid cloud backup via C2 Surveillance.

Synology has prioritised security with adaptive multi-factor authentication (AMFA), machine learning-based threat detection via Active Insight, and immutable snapshots that guard against ransomware and accidental deletions.

Administrators benefit from role-based access controls, streamlined monitoring tools, and a centralised dashboard for managing multiple Synology devices.

The DS925+ enforces a strict drive compatibility policy, requiring Synology-approved drives for new installations, ensuring long-term stability and seamless integration. Systems using third-party drives must migrate existing pools to be usable.

It ships with a 3-year limited warranty, which can be extended to five years through Synology’s EW201 or Extended Warranty Plus programs, depending on the region.

Whether you’re a media professional handling large file sets, an IT manager overseeing remote backups and surveillance, or a hybrid team needing secure collaboration tools, the DS925+ delivers a compelling, future-ready NAS solution. Compact, fast, and packed with features, it’s built to handle modern workloads without compromise.

I’ve got one on the test bench at the moment, and it’s performing admirably. A full review is coming in a few weeks.
