Polish Armaments Group (PGZ) has entered two collaborative ventures with defence companies Babcock International and Fincantieri during the MSPO defence industry exhibition in Kielce, Poland.

The strategic cooperation agreement (SCA) with UK-based Babcock is set to enhance joint efforts in naval and aerial defence sectors.

Babcock and PGZ will combine their expertise in the design, maintenance, and management of maritime vessels, as well as in sustaining military aircraft and developing strategic asset management solutions for military use.

Babcock’s existing operations in Gdynia and Warsaw are already working with PGZ on Poland’s Miecznik programme.

In September 2024, Babcock extended its contract with PGZ to support the construction of Poland’s Miecznik-class frigates until the completion of the third and final vessel in 2031.

Under this programme, Babcock will deliver three multifunctional frigates based on Arrowhead 140 design to the Polish Navy.

In May 2025, the Polish Ministry of National Defence revealed the beginning of construction on the second Miecznik-class frigate, ORP Storm, at PGZ Stocznia Wojenna (PGZ SW) in Gdynia.

This initiative aims to bolster the Polish Navy’s ability to address threats in the Baltic Sea region.

PGZ CEO Adam Leszkiewicz stated: “Building long-term partnerships with foreign partners is crucial to PGZ strategy. Our cooperation with Babcock demonstrates real partnership. Today’s agreement is a milestone in our cooperation, which we are building across various domains with decades in mind. Together, we strengthen not only the Polish Armed Forces but also Nato’s security and military potential”.

Separately, PGZ also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Italian shipbuilding company Fincantieri to explore collaborative possibilities in designing and constructing advanced naval platforms, including submarines.

The MoU outlines a cooperative framework to support the modernisation efforts of the Polish Navy, with focus on the Orka submarine procurement project.

It will combine Fincantieri’s technological knowledge in naval construction with PGZ’s industrial capabilities.

The partnership aims to create “joint opportunities” for the Polish Navy and potentially extend its reach into international markets.

Fincantieri CEO and managing director Pierroberto Folgiero said: “Poland is a key strategic partner for Fincantieri, and we are proud to contribute to the country’s ambitious naval modernization plans.

“With a legacy of more than 180 submarines built and a proven track record in advanced naval platforms, we bring unparalleled expertise to support the Orka programme and to develop a long-term industrial cooperation with PGZ and the national defence industry.”
