iOS 26 Will Be The Name Of iPhone’s Next OS, Not iOS 19

Apple’s iOS 26 will be the next OS powering the iPhone, not iOS 19, according to a new report. Here are the details on this.

Apple is set to revamp the way it names its software for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and other devices when it announces new updates at WWDC next month. That’s according to a new report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

The report claims that Apple will ditch its existing naming convention and instead switch to a new year-based one. That means that Apple’s iOS 19 will be iOS 26, with the rest of its software updates following suit.

The next Apple operating systems will be identified by year, rather than with a version number, according to people with knowledge of the matter. That means the current iOS 18 will give way to “iOS 26,” said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plan is still private. Other updates will be known as iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26 and visionOS 26.

Apple believes that the move will “bring consistency to its branding and move away from an approach that can be confusing to customers and developers.”

However, it’s possible that some may be confused by the fact that iOS 26 will actually launch in 2025, not 2026 as the name might suggest. It isn’t clear why Apple has chosen to start at 26 and not 25. However, the convention does make a little sense when you remember that it will be released in September, meaning 2026 will be the first full year it’s available.
