Some gamers got a frustrating surprise when picking up their new Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders at GameStop: their consoles had screen damage caused by staples.

A small mistake at one GameStop store led to some damaged Nintendo Switch 2 consoles, but the company is already fixing the issue and replacing the affected devices.

According to a report by IGN, the staples were used to attach receipts directly to the outside of the Switch 2 boxes, and in some cases, they went all the way through and damaged the screen inside.

The issue appears to be a result of how the Switch 2 is packaged. When you open the box, the screen or tablet part of the console sits just beneath the top flap.

So if someone used a stapler with too much force to attach a receipt to the top of the box, the staples could pierce through the packaging and hit the screen.

Photos shared by users on social media, like X (Twitter), show small holes or marks on the box and even visible damage to the screen itself.

This caused concern among early buyers who were excited to get their hands on the console but instead found it already damaged before they even turned it on.

GameStop quickly responded, saying that this was an “isolated incident” that happened at just one of their stores.

A company spokesperson told IGN that they were looking into what happened and promised to take care of any customers affected by the problem.

In fact, one Reddit user shared that they were able to return their damaged Switch 2 and get a replacement after speaking with a store manager.

To reassure customers, GameStop posted on X that they had addressed the situation.

They emphasized that it only occurred at one location, replacements were offered to those affected, and, humorously, they added that the staplers had been “confiscated” to prevent this from happening again.
