    Food Recalls : ​US Nationwide Enoki Mushroom Recall Issued Over Listeria Contamination

    Recently Multiple enoki mushroom products of multiple popular brands in USA has been recalled due suspected contamination of Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause serious infections. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed that these recalls are made after the results of routine inspection and testing reveals the presence of Listeria in some of the tested mushroom products.​

    Affected Products and Distribution

    The recall includes products of several popular brands and distributors, including:​

    • Enoki King Mushroom Farm: 5.3-ounce packets of Enoki mushrooms distributed from California and New York to retail stores nationwide.
    • New Age International Inc.: “Daily Veggies” enoki mushrooms sold in 200g  plastic packages and labeled as “Product of Korea,” with the product code “8809159458890.” These were distributed nationwide between October and November 2024.
    • HH Fresh Trading Corp: Taiwan Enoki mushrooms sold in 200g plastic packages and marked with barcode #4711498860019. These were distributed in West Virginia in August 2024.

    Consumers who have purchased these products are advised to avoid their consumption for further safety as well as immediately return them to the place of purchase along with full refund or dispose them safely.

    Health Risks Associated with Listeria

    Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne bacterium that leads to listeriosis, a serious infection life threatening infection to:​

    • Pregnant Woman
    • Newborns
    • Old Age People
    • Individuals with weak immunity systems​

    Symptoms of listeriosis includes:​

    • Fever
    • Muscle pain
    • Nausea or diarrhea
    • Headache
    • Stiffness in neck
    • Confusion
    • Loss of body balance
    • Seizures​

    listeriosis can increase the threat to pregnant woman of miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or possible life-threatening infection to the newborn. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 1,600 people in the U.S. found infected with listeriosis every year, and out of them about 260 are reported deaths.

    Previous Incidents

    This is not the first time enoki mushrooms are recalled due to listeria contamination. In 2020, a listeria outbreak linked with enoki mushrooms consumption resulted in four deaths. Recently, in November 2024, a similar mushroom food products recalls was issued for Taiwan enoki mushrooms distributed in West Virginia due to similar contamination health concerns.

    Recommendations for Public

    The FDA recommends that people should follow precautionary measures including:​

    • Check their refrigerators for the product of recalled enoki mushroom products.
    • Dispose of any of such products found with you or return them to the original place of purchase for safely dispose of.
    • Properly clean and sanitize any surfaces and containers which have come in contact with the contaminated mushrooms.
    • Get immediate medical attention if anyone experiences any symptoms of listeriosis after consuming or contacting with enoki mushrooms.​
