Lumberyard presents Cinco De Mayo concert with Banda Machos, more shows lined up
The Lumberyard bar, restaurant and concert venue in Canyon continues its season of live events with a Cinco De Mayo concert on Sunday, May 4.
Banda Machos, with special guests Banda Maguey and Las Voces Del Rancho, will be performing on The First United Bank Stage.
Gates open at the venue, located at 850 N 23rd St., at 4:30 p.m. with the show starting at 6 p.m. Ticket prices vary; see https://thelumberyardcanyon.com/ or follow them on Facebook.
Other upcoming concerts at the Lumberyard include Christopher Erin and The Obvious Few on May 16 at 8 p.m.; Kansas with 38 Special on May 24 at 7:30 p.m.; and Chris Janson with special guest Pat Green on June 6 at 7 p.m.
WT Concert, Symphonic Bands to close out semester with free concert
Compositions by big names of the past and present will be performed at the final concerts of the year by West Texas A&M University’s (WT) Concert and Symphonic bands.
The Concert Band will perform at 6 p.m. May 7, followed by the Symphonic Band at 8 p.m., both in Mary Moody Northen Recital Hall on WT’s Canyon campus. Admission is free. For information, call 806-651-2840.
The Concert Band’s repertoire will include “Sevens” by Samuel Hazo, “Evergreen” by Viet Cuong, Danzón No. 2 by Arturo Márquez and arranged by Oliver Nickel, “Warsaw Concerto” by Richard Addinsell; and the finale from Symphony No. 1 by Vasili Kalinnikov. Norrin Hodgson, a graduate student in music from Odessa, will conduct “Sevens,” and Chema Garcia, a graduate student in music from Wellington, will conduct Danzón No. 2. Piper Fowler, a senior music major from Amarillo, is piano soloist for Warsaw Concerto.
The Symphonic Band’s repertoire will include “Vienna Philharmonic Fanfare” by Richard Strauss, “Anti-Fanfare” by Andrew Blair, “Shenandoah” by Omar Thomas, “The Thunderer” by John Philip Sousa, “Soul” from Concerto for Wind Ensemble by Kevin Day and “Rocky Point Holiday” by Ron Nelson. Don Lefevre, associate professor of music and director of bands, said the Symphonic Band excelled in its Carnegie Hall concert March 13 along with its concerts closer to home. “During my 37 years at WT, I have never had a more talented group of students,” he said.

Graduating WT student artists to be featured in new exhibition
A trio of student artists will be in the spotlight for the final exhibition of the 2024-2025 arts season at WT in Canyon. It opens with a reception at 5 p.m. May 8 in the Dord Fitz Formal Gallery in Mary Moody Northen Hall on WT’s Canyon campus and will be on view through May 23.
Featured in the show, titled “Have You Seen Me,” are Stormy Rhea Chavez, a senior art major from Lubbock; Mayra Flores, a senior art major from Greeley, Colorado; and Rebecca Schlenker, a senior art major from Friona.
“The show’s title references the multiple viewpoints of inner lives that artwork can reveal,” said Jon Revett, art program director and the Doris Alexander Distinguished Professor of Fine Arts. “All of these young women have honed their practice into different forms of expression that are the culmination of their undergraduate education.”

WT Electronic Ensemble to perform student-composed works
Students in WT’s Electronic Ensemble will offer an evening of newly composed works and improvisations in its final concert of the year, at 7:30 p.m. May 5 in the Sybil B. Harrington Fine Arts Complex Recital Hall on WT’s Canyon campus. Admission is free. For information, call 806-651-2840.
The ensemble, which composes several of its own works, uses nontraditional electronic instruments and production tools to create musical performance pieces, said Dr. Ryan Ingebritsen, assistant professor of music.
Ensemble members include Austin Jones, a senior music technology major from Amarillo; Connor McCleanny, a senior music technology major from Amarillo; Nassir Reyes, a senior music technology major from Shallowater; and Kortni VanDamme, a senior music technology major from Amarillo.
Also performing are Xander Alman, a junior education major from Hereford; Marissa Portillo, a sophomore music technology major from Lubbock; and Kaitlyn Rubinski, a senior music major from Amarillo.

Jeremy Camp: These Days Tour to make stop May 8 at Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts
Jeremy Camp will bring his current tour to Amarillo Thursday, May 8 at 7 p.m. at the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are available at panhandletickets.com.
Between 2002 and 2024, Camp has released 12 albums, five of them RIAA- certified as Gold. He has sold more than 6 million albums with 43 No. 1 singles across all formats. His music has earned him numerous awards and nominations across the Christian and secular music industries, including five GMA Dove Awards, a Grammy nomination, three American Music Award nominations, and four ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Awards. Camp was named Billboard’s No. 2 Christian artist of the decade.
Outside of music, in 2020 he had an international theatrical movie release called “I Still Believe.” The film depicted his life story of love and loss of his first wife after a battle with cancer.
Rob Schneider to perform May 9 in Amarillo

His show throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas features not only his comedy stand-up show, but a very special musical guest from Las Vegas, Nevada to get the party rolling. ALT’s ‘Dreamgirls’ production continues through May 18
Amarillo Little Theatre’s next production will be a love letter to American R&B music and the artists that made such music great. “Dreamgirls,” ALT’s final show in its 97th season, is hitting the Allen Shankles Mainstage now through May 18.
ALT’s cast includes Nataziah Gipson as Effie White, Tia Hunt as Deena Jones and Jay Hayes as Lorrell Robinson. Also joining the cast is Devlon Jones as Curtis Taylor, Jr., Kyle Gipson as James Thunder Early, Toderick Hunt as C.C. White and Christopher Alford as Marty. The talented ensemble includes A’Dreonna Armstrong, Alex Barrera, Nels Bjork, Roman Brown, Ashton Colbert, Kayleigh Colbert, Michele Colbert, Sarai Dinkens-Agalaba, Savvy Emile, Hugh Fristoe, Brandon Graves, Vanessa Hill, Saturn Horton, Mitcheal Johnson Jr., Nathan Jones, Frank Salazar, Ariana Sanchez, Nicholas Shaffer, Zachary Vidaurri, Brianna Ware, NaKisha Wood and Aspen Younker.
Jason Crespin and Kissey Cummings serve as co-artistic directors, with music direction by Jennifer Akins and choreography by Shawn Walsh. Ashley DeVoid serves as assistant to the directors.
Additionally, on Sunday, May 4, singer-songwriter Kamica King from Dallas will perform a special 90-minute concert at 2:30 p.m. on the ALT Mainstage.
On May 11, ALT will host a “Mimosas and Mumus” Mother’s Day event before the 2:30 p.m. matinee. Guests will enjoy food catered by Black Fig, mimosas, karaoke and a live DJ beginning at 12:30 p.m. before that afternoon’s performance.
