In a remote and lushly forested area of a single mountain range on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, scientists have discovered a carnivorous caterpillar species that makes a living in such a macabre way that they have nicknamed it the “bone collector.”The caterpillar prowls spider webs to scavenge trapped and helpless victims such as ants, beetles, weevils and flies, the researchers said. The crafty caterpillar camouflages itself from the spider, which would happily eat it, by hiding its body inside a case it fashions from its own silk and adorns it with inedible body parts that it collected from the…
LONDON :Marks & Spencer stopped taking online orders in the UK and Ireland on Friday following a cyber attack which it reported earlier in the week, an announcement which sent its shares down by 5 per cent. The British company, which sells its clothing and homeware ranges through its website and app, said it made the decision as part of “proactive management” of the incident. “Our experienced team – supported by leading cyber experts – is working extremely hard to restart online and app shopping,” the company said on X, apologising for the inconvenience and stating that its stores remained…

In late 2023, Israel was aiming to assassinate Ibrahim Biari, a top Hamas commander in the northern Gaza Strip who had helped plan the Oct. 7 massacres. But Israeli intelligence could not find Mr. Biari, who they believed was hidden in the network of tunnels underneath Gaza.So Israeli officers turned to a new military technology infused with artificial intelligence, three Israeli and American officials briefed on the events said. The technology was developed a decade earlier but had not been used in battle. Finding Mr. Biari provided new incentive to improve the tool, so engineers in Israel’s Unit 8200, the…
It is in a president’s interest to ensure that the economy and the stock market are strong. Yet the Trump administration has been doing just the opposite. The mood in the markets has been upbeat this week, largely because the president and his advisers softened their stances, rolling back some of their threats toward both China and the Federal Reserve. Periods of relative calm like this last one have been a relief, but they haven’t lasted long, for good reasons.Start with President Trump’s imposition of tariffs on countries around the world, especially his decision to start a trade war with China.…
A dovish shift Stocks are on a three-day winning streak as investors cheer cooling trade-war tensions. Another boost has come from the Fed and from Google, whose shares are up nearly 5 percent in premarket trading on decent first-quarter results. But while Washington and Beijing seem to be easing off their brinkmanship, it may be too late to reverse the damage to the economy and business psychology. The latest: China may suspend some of its most onerous levies on vital U.S. imports — including plane leases, medical equipment and industrial chemicals — Bloomberg reports. That comes as President Trump reportedly considers dialing…
Late yesterday, Sethuraman Panchanathan, whom President Trump hired to run the National Science Foundation five years ago, quit. He didn’t say why, but it was clear enough: Last weekend, Trump cut more than 400 active research awards from the N.S.F., and he is pressing Congress to halve the agency’s $9 billion budget. The Trump administration has targeted the American scientific enterprise, an engine of research and innovation that has thrummed for decades. It has slashed or frozen budgets at the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and NASA. It has fired or…
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Thursday that the Kremlin is “ready to reach a deal” with the U.S. on Ukraine, though he also said some elements need to be “fine tuned.””The President of the United States believes, and I think rightly so, that we are moving in the right direction,” Lavrov said in an interview Thursday with “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan.”Lavrov declined to say what is being discussed in negotiations or whether any deal was imminent. He said the negotiations are “not supposed to be public.” “The negotiations continue, and until the end of the negotiations, we cannot…

The Department of Health and Human Services announced this week that it would work to remove some artificial dyes from the U.S. food supply, citing concerns about how they might affect children’s health.Among the dyes that the health secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., is targeting are colorings common in ultraprocessed foods like candy, chips and some cereals. In a news conference on Tuesday announcing the effort, Dr. Marty Makary, the Food and Drug Administration commissioner, linked these dyes to obesity, diabetes, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, cancer and other health conditions in children.Several, mostly small studies have found a link between…
