House Republicans on Monday proposed a series of sharp restrictions on the federal anti-hunger program known as food stamps, seeking to limit its funding and benefits as part of a sprawling package to advance President Trump’s tax cuts. The proposal, included in a draft measure to be considered by the House Agriculture Committee this week, would require states to supply some of the funding for food stamps while forcing more of its beneficiaries to obtain employment in exchange for federal aid. The moves could result in potentially millions of low-income families losing access to the safety net program. But G.O.P. leaders…

US officials said Monday the State Department has authorized the sale of $1.4 billion worth of military aircraft and equipment to the United Arab Emirates, ahead of President Donald Trump’s visit this week. Chandelier bidding. Quiet phone banks. Executives wiping their brows. One of the most anticipated auctions of the season proved to be anticlimactic on Monday evening at Christie’s in New York, where many objects were pre-sold to guaranteed bids and there was little evidence of the enthusiastic buyers who defined the market’s peak in 2022. Experts said the sale was marred by the economic uncertainty surrounding President Trump’s tariffs and how they might hurt the global art market.Louise Riggio consigned nearly 40 works from the collection she built with her husband, the Barnes & Noble founder Leonard Riggio, who died last year.…
A Democratic National Committee panel on Monday recommended redoing David Hogg and Malcolm Kenyatta’s elections to party vice-chair, as Hogg faces a separate intraparty battle over his push to primary some Democratic politicians. The DNC’s credentials committee passed a resolution determining that Kenyatta and Hogg’s election in February was incomplete due to violations of the party’s charter, and the party should hold two new votes with only candidates who previously ran participating. The resolution will now be presented to the entire DNC.Monday’s resolution came in response to a challenge brought by Kalyn Free, a Native American committeeperson from Oklahoma who lost…
Kosmos 482, under the USSR Venera program, was launched into space in 1972 to land on the second planet. However, the rocket malfunctioned and in Earth’s orbit, and it’s still revolving there ever since. Its rugged design lets it stay there and tolerate the atmosphere of Venus. This durability implies that it could survive reentry into Earth and remain intact with no impact. It is supposed to land either on 9 or 10 May without actually breaking anything up. The Aerospace Corporation is tracking it through the radar data provided by the U.S Space network surveillance. When and Where Might It…
During President Trump’s first term, the idea that special interests and governments were buying meals and booking rooms at his hotels set off legal and ethical alarms about the potential for corruption.Mr. Trump’s second term is making those concerns look trivial. The administration’s plan to accept a $400 million luxury jet from the Qatari royal family is only the latest example of an increasingly no-holds-barred atmosphere in Washington under Trump 2.0. Not only would the famously transactional chief executive be able to use the plane while in office, but he is also expected to transfer it to his presidential foundation once…
In September 2023, crowds packed Times Square, cheering, and taking pictures as Sean “Diddy” Combs received the key to the city, an honour bestowed on him by the New York City mayor who called Combs the “bad boy of entertainment”. Less than two years later and just three miles down the road, people were now queueing around the block to secure a spot to see him inside the courtroom to face charges of sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation for prostitution. The fall from grace of this music mogul has been sharp and shocking.Read more: Combs forced women into ‘freak offs’, jurors…
The Dallas Mavericks have secured the No. 1 pick for the 2025 NBA Draft after entering Monday’s lottery with just a 1.8% chance. The Mavs – who will have the top pick for the first time in franchise history – are now expected to select standout prospect Cooper Flagg on June 25, capping off a wild season in which Dallas traded five-team All-NBA star Luka Doncic in February to the Los Angeles Lakers. It’s a seemingly improbable turn of events considering that the Mavs had the 11th lowest odds going into Monday and three teams — the Charlotte Hornets, Washington Wizards, and…
