The Japanese Fair Trade Commission is planning a raft of proposals that would emulate Europe’s App Store regulations regarding Big Tech firms such as Apple and Google. It may now be consulting with the public, but Japan’s Fair Trade Commission (FTC) expects to begin enforcing its Big Tech regulations from December 18, 2025. The consultation comes after the plans were passed by Japan’s House of Representatives and House of Councillors in 2024. The country’s FTC has issued what its announcement calls draft subordinate legislations. They are all part of Japan’s Mobile Software Competition Act, and a summary document shows that the new…
Terminally ill journalist Dame Esther Rantzen was branded “disrespectful” and “insulting” by MPs during a debate on the assisted dying bill. The broadcaster and Childline founder wrote to all MPs ahead of Friday’s Commons’ debate urging them to vote for what she called a “crucial reform”. MPs were voting on amendments made to the bill – the report stage – following months of a committee going line by line through it after being introduced last year by Labour MP Kim Leadbeater. The bill says people with six months to live who have the mental capacity can request medical assistance to legally…
THE air in the corner of Battersea where I live is suffused with the smell of butter thanks to a new bakery-cum-café. August Bakery produces bread and croissants in such delicious profusion that the place is permanently packed. At weekends (which these days appear to start on Friday), people queue around the block from eight in the morning for their little piece of baked paradise. Is this one of many signs that Britain is turning into France? The British and French have had a turbulent relationship since at least the Norman Conquest in 1066 (I have on my shelves a fat…
BRUSSELS — European Union regulators will seek public comment on proposed changes from Microsoft for Teams, signaling the U.S. company may be nearing the end of a long-running antitrust case targeting its messaging and videoconferencing app. Microsoft had previously offered some modifications including unbundling Teams from its Office software suite in an attempt to head off the antitrust probe shortly after it was opened by the EU two years ago. But those proposals didn’t satisfy the European Commission, the 27-nation bloc’s top competition enforcer, which accused Microsoft last year of potentially abusive behavior. The Commission said Friday that it will…

There is always baseball happening — almost too much baseball for one person to handle themselves. That’s why we’re here to help, though, by sifting through the previous days’ games, and figuring out what you missed, but shouldn’t have. Here are all the best moments from last night in Major League Baseball:No one does it like OhtaniThe last two seasons have done a lot to prove that Shohei Ohtani isn’t special just because he can both pitch and hit. He hasn’t pitched since 2023, thanks to the need for a second Tommy John surgery, but the bat? The bat has never been more…
HONG KONG: Asian markets limped into the weekend as investors consolidated gains fed by the China-US trade war hiatus, having enjoyed one of their best weeks since Donald Trump unloaded his “Liberation Day” tariff bazooka last month. The dollar edged down after data showed US wholesale prices rose less than expected last month and retail sales were flat – following below-forecast consumer inflation figures – providing hope the Federal Reserve could cut interest rates this year. Oil prices extended losses after tumbling on Thursday on hopes for a breakthrough in Iran nuclear talks after Trump said progress had been made…
