Apple’s Image Playground app, launched last year, was promoted as a simple way to make personalized images using Apple Intelligence.
However, many users were disappointed by the early version of the app.
Some found the image quality poor, and others pointed out strange mistakes, like hands with six fingers or the app failing to generate images of basic things like an “old man” or a “flower.”
A number of users felt the app seemed more like a fun toy than a serious image creation tool, especially when compared to more powerful and flexible AI art generators.
That said, some people still found it enjoyable for casual use. (Via: Apple Insider)
Now, Apple is trying to improve Image Playground by integrating ChatGPT. This upgrade was announced at Apple’s WWDC 2025 event.
The goal is to make the app more useful and versatile, helping it compete with other image-generation apps. Thanks to this update, Image Playground will now support a wider range of styles.
In addition to the original options like Animation, Illustration, Sketch, and Genmoji, users can now generate images in styles like Oil Painting, Watercolor, Vector, Anime, and Print.
There’s also a new Any Style option, which lets users describe exactly what they want the image to look like. These new styles are labeled ChatGPT style in the app.
To create these images, Image Playground will send the user’s description to ChatGPT, but only with the user’s permission.
This gives Apple users better control over their data while getting access to more advanced tools.
While Image Playground is free to use, the new ChatGPT-powered styles require a ChatGPT subscription if you intend to generate lots of photos.
Last year, Apple added ChatGPT support to Siri and tools like Notes and Mail, helping users write and summarize text more easily.
The improved Image Playground is expected to roll out this fall with the release of iOS 26.
