[SINGAPORE] The People’s Action Party (PAP) is leading in Punggol GRC with 54 per cent of the vote in the sample count, according to the Elections Department on Saturday (May 3).
If the final result proves similar, it would mean the re-election of Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong – after a campaign in which PAP heavyweights stressed his importance amid economic uncertainty, including his role in trade negotiations with the US.
The sample count has a 95 per cent chance of being within 4 per cent of the final result. A recount is automatically triggered if the winning margin is 2 per cent or less of the valid votes cast.
The PAP team is led by DPM Gan and comprises Senior Minister of State Janil Puthucheary, Minister of State Sun Xueling, and NTUC assistant secretary-general Yeo Wan Ling.
This is after DPM Gan moved to Punggol GRC, from Chua Chu Kang GRC, in an eleventh-hour shift on Nomination Day.
WP fielded a fresh four-member team of Harpreet Singh, Jackson Au, Alexis Dang and Siti Alia Mattar.

Punggol GRC is home to Singapore’s youngest electorate, with more than half of its over 120,000 voters estimated to be aged between 21 and 45. The constituency was carved out of the now-defunct Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC – which the WP has never contested – and includes the former Punggol West SMC.
In GE2020, WP’s Punggol West candidate Tan Chen Chen took 39.02 per cent of the vote, losing to the PAP’s Sun Xueling.
Note: As this is a sample count, the election result could be different. Counting is still in progress. The public should wait for the announcement of the election result by the returning officer, Han Kok Juan, which will be broadcast live on television.
