    condoms and hiv

Condoms are highly effective in preventing HIV transmission when used correctly and consistently. Studies show that consistent condom use reduces the risk of HIV transmission by about 85% to 99% during sexual activity.

    Here’s how condoms work:

    1. Barrier Protection: Condoms act as a physical barrier, preventing the exchange of bodily fluids (semen, vaginal fluids, and blood) that can carry the HIV virus.
    2. Correct Use is Crucial: The effectiveness of condoms depends on proper use every time during sexual activity. Incorrect use or breakage can reduce their effectiveness.
    3. Types of Condoms:

Latex condoms are most commonly used and highly effective against HIV.

Polyurethane condoms are suitable for individuals allergic to latex and are also effective against HIV.

Natural or lambskin condoms are less effective in preventing HIV as they may have tiny pores that can allow the virus to pass through.

    1. Dual Protection: In addition to HIV prevention, condoms protect against other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancies.

    Key Points for Condom Success:

Use a new condom for every act of intercourse.

Store condoms properly (away from heat or sharp objects).

Check the expiration date and the integrity of the packaging.

Use water- or silicone-based lubricants with latex condoms to avoid breakage.

While condoms are highly effective, combining their use with other prevention strategies (like PrEP, regular testing, and limiting risky behaviors) provides optimal protection against HIV.
